Aloha and thank you for showing interest in the New Horizons Relationship 911 retreat. Mark and Kelli Turansky are known for their practical “workshop” style of counseling that helps couples understand what the problem is, and how to fix it in a very short amount of time. Mark is regarded as “Guy Friendly” which means men gravitate towards his teaching style because he can relate to where they may have a difficulty in understanding their partner. Kelli has a unique ability to connect with women so they can feel understood and then guided towards success. One common complaint we get from couples who have tried traditional counseling is in their experience, counselors “take sides” with one of the spouses which ultimately sabotages safety and good will that is needed for lasting change to take place. Kelli and Mark realize that all relationship problems are “co-created” and therefore help couples understand what each of them can be empowered to do to make changes in the overall dynamic.
The Format: We start with developing awareness: awareness of what is REALLY going on, what your issues and baggage are and how they are affecting your current relationship. Then we move towards the solution: Now that we know the problem, what do we do about it? Mark and Kelli teach a new paradigm of having discussions called “Heart Talk” that is designed to deal with conflict without denigrating into useless arguments. These practical “tools” will help couples flourish in their quest for intimacy and closeness and help rekindle the passion that has many times diminished in long term relationships over time.
- In the retreat, you would be working with two counselors, one male and one female. We believe this creates a good balance in the room to allow each gender to be supported.
- In the retreat, you will stay in a home on the North Shore of Oahu to enjoy a respite get-away near the beach; both food and lodging are part of the experience.
- At this three-day retreat, our first evening together is enjoying a meal family style and then we will spend the rest of the evening getting to hear your perspectives on what the challenges are. This allows us more time to assess how we can help. The second day is the workshop done “seminar style” where you will get valuable teaching to help you update your perspective of each other as well as the relational dynamic. The third and final day will be the “practicum” where we will do hands-on coaching using the new communication styles you have been taught.
- The main benefit of doing a retreat, as opposed to traditional in office counseling, is “immersion.” A couple immerses themselves in the total experience. Leaving behind the distractions of home, they “get away from it all” and concentrate only on their relationship for the entire weekend by taking walks on the beach, talking in their room or relaxing together without going home to kids, emails, chores and other distractions that life demands. For most, the value of immersion is immeasurable.
